2011-2012

TOURNAMENT  FORMAT

THE BRACKET PART OF FOOTBALL FOR THE EASTERN PART OF THE STATE THAT APPEARS ON OUR WEBSITE IS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THEREFORE, WEEKLY RESULTS WILL BE POSTED FOR DISTRICT ONE IN THIS LOCATION FOR ALL OF OUR CLASSIFICASTIONS. IN A LINEAR FORMAT, IT WILL SHOW THE WEEKLY RESULTS AMD THE MATCHUPS FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. IF THE WEBSITE FOR FOOTBALL CAN BECOME FUNCTIONAL AGAIN, WE WILL REVERT BACK TO IT.

In AAAA, we are a region unto ourselves.  At the conclusion of the 10th week of the season, (November 5, 2011), the sixteen (16) Teams with the highest point average will qualify for the District One Playoffs.  The eight (8) Teams with the highest point average will host the 1st Round Games.  The same format will prevail for the following three (3) weeks. Play begins the weekend of November 11/12.

In AAA, eight (8) Teams with the highest point total will qualify for the District Playoffs.  The teams will begin to play on the weekend of November 11/12, play single elimination for 3 consecutive weekends, and the winner will play the District 12 champion on the weekend of December 2\3

In AA, This will be a four (4) team tournament. The participants are as follows: Catholic League Champion,

District 12 Public League Champion, District 1 Champion and the team from either of these areas that has the best point average. The point average to be used is the one used to determine the Champion in the three other classifications.  The four teams will be placed in numerical order based upon their point average that is determined by their seasonal record.

To accommodate the scheduling differences between the three groups, the District 12 Public League will use the results of the first 8 weeks of the football season to determine their point average. The District 12 Catholic League will use the first 9 weeks for he same purpose.  The District One Class 2A schools will use the full 10 weeks.  In all cases, the point average for the teams will be determined using their regular season games.

The playoff format will place Team # 1 vs Team #4 and Team #2 vs Team #3.  The first round of play will be scheduled for the weekend of November 11/12 at the site of the top-seeded team.

In A, the five (5) District One Teams will compete with one (1) Team from District Twelve for positions in the two (2) Team Sub-Region bracket.Teams will be ranked by point average for placement in the bracket on November 11/12, Team #1 will play Team #2. The winner of that game will play on November 25/26 to determine against the Champion from District Eleven.

The total bracket scenario will be shown on the District One website.   www.district-one.net

FOOTBALL POINT SYSTEM

CLASSIFICATION

Each team must have a PIAA Classification.  A Non-Member school of the PIAA must submit a form to the PIAA School it plays on which the male enrollment at the school for grades 10, 11, and 12 is noted and the form is signed by the Principal or Headmaster.  That total number is then placed within the enrollment ranges established by the PIAA to determine the classification of the school.

POINT  SYSTEM

Listed below is a chart that explains points earned when you defeat a school.  There are no points awarded for a loss.

          4A               3A               2A               1A

4A     100             80               60               40

3A     120             100             80               60

2A     140             120             100             80

1A     160             140             120             100

                             READ  ACROSS

EXAMPLE:

4A defeats 2A = 60 points

3A defeats 4A = 120 points

1A defeats 1A = 100 points

In addition to the points earned for a win, there are bonus points earned under these conditions:

For any team that you defeat, you receive 10 points for every win that team has on its schedule before and after you defeat them.  While the “win points” are related to the classification of your school and that of the opponent, the “ bonus points” are not.  The bonus points are not related to team classifications.

At the conclusion of the first ten (10) weekends of the season, the “ win points” are added to the “bonus points” and their sum is divided by the number of games that you played during those ten (10) weeks.  The averages established for each team are placed in rank order to determine which teams make the playoffs.

TIE BREAKING PROCEDURE FOR FINAL SEASON STANDINGS

1-   If teams played each other during the season, the winner would be ranked higher.

2-   Compare the won-loss – tie records of common opponents of the tied schools using 10 points for a win, 5 point for a tie and zero for a loss.

3-   Compare the won-loss-tie records of the regular season contests for each tied school that were used to determine the rankings-using the point system described above.

4-   Determine the winning percentage of the common opponents that the tied schools played.

5-   Determine the winning percentage of the regular season opponents that the tied schools played.

6-   Determine which team yielded the fewest points when the tied teams played each other during the regular season.

7-   Determine which of the tied teams yielded the fewest points when they played against common opponents.

8-   Determine which of the tied teams yielded the fewest points when they played against their regular season opponents.

9-   Flip a coin.

NOTE:  The Public League in Philadelphia conducts their own city championship tournament that precedes the PIAA football tournament.  This occurs in the AA and A classifications.  The Catholic League, which like the Public League is a member of District 12, has no Class A football teams but have a League championship tournament for their AA schools.

For purposes of having a common format of determining which teams enter the PIAA “A” and “AA” playoffs, only games that

are played during the regular season are counted in the tabulation of points that leads to determining positions in the PIAA “AA and A” playoffs where teams from both District I and Districts 12 are co-mingled. Therefore, for point tabulation purposes, the first seven (7) weeks of the Public League schedule and the first nine (9) weeks of the Catholic League schedule will count. Games played as part of the Public and Catholic League championship play offs will not be counted.

REMEMBER: The final standings for playoff purposes is determined by points a team earns by defeating teams of different classifications divided by the number of games the team plays by a cut-off date.  The resulting average determines the team’s seeded position in the PIAA play offs.

*************************************************

The 4A & 3A in District One will be shown by themselves. In 2A & 1A, Districts One & Twelve schools will be co-mingled to give a true standing. An (Inc.) means information is lacking that is usually related to non-member PIAA schools.  As information is received, the average will replace the INC.

STATE PLAYOFF SCHEDULE

The first round of the playoffs will be the weekend of Nov. 12/13

The finals will be held the weekend of December 17/18.
