AAA & AA

 

TOURNAMENT SINGLES & DOUBLES

 

The Steering Committee seeds a 32 draw for AAA and a 16 draw for AA  District 1

Singles and Doubles Tournaments. Participation in the District 1 Tournament is

based on the number of schools participating in the League Dual Meets, determined

by the scale below:

    1 to 2 schools                        1 representative

    3 to 5 schools                 2 representatives

    6 to 7 schools                 3 representatives

    8 to 9 schools                 4 representatives

   10 +                                         5 representatives

 

SINGLES

 

Each league will set up their qualifying procedures to determine their representatives to the Singles Championships.

 

DOUBLES

 

To determine the representatives for the District I Doubles Championships a sectional or league doubles tournaments will be held after September 26, 2008 so girls that have been eliminated in singles competition may be used as members of the doubles team competition.

 

“NO-AD” scoring will be used in the first two rounds. Twelve point tie-breaker will be used if the score reaches six all in any set.

 

No school should be jeopardized in league play because they have a girl participating in District competition.

 

Contestants not at the courts by times listed below will lose by forfeit. Participants will be contacted by he league representative, regarding starting time for single and doubles.

 

INDEPENDENT MEMBER SCHOOLS

 

Qualification procedures for independent school’s to participate in the District I Girls’ Championships as follows:

 

Singles

  1. Independent schools, as a group must organize and run a qualifying tournament.  In the event arrangements cannot e worked out to the mutual satisfaction or participating independent schools, the resolution will be rendered by the District Committee.
  2. Participation to the District I tournament will be based on the following:

1 to 3 schools competing in qualifying tournament – 1 representative

4 or more schools – 2 representatives

Others upon consideration of the Committee

Doubles

To compete in the Doubles Championships schools must be participating in a dual meet league schedule.

METHOD OF SEEDING SINGLES & DOUBLES

  1. Seeding criteria: (In order of importance)
    1. Returning District & Sate medal winners
    2. Quarter-Finals
    3. Head to head interscholastic competition in current season.
    4. Previous District I tournament experience including doubles
    5. Middle Sates ranking/ head to head
    6. . Similar qualification or insufficient data (to include more than the number of seeds) draw for placement.

 

  1. Seeding Procedure:

Step 1 – Seeding – A. The 32 draw will have a maximum of 12 seeds.

B. The 16 draw will have a maximum of 6 seeds

 

Step 2 – All league champions will be reviewed using the seeding criteria and will be ranked 1 through 11.  League champions will be placed according to the league tournament.  This will be the tentative ladder.

 

Step 3 – Committee members may offer any #2 ranked league player for ladder consideration according to the results of the league tournament.  These players will be reviewed using the seeding criteria and if the claim is judged valid, will be placed in the appropriately ranked position on the tournament ladder. The same procedure shall be used for the wild card qualifiers. Example: #2’s could become 11, 12, 13, etc. If the player is placed in the top 11 the other players will drop down accordingly. The #2’s will not be placed higher than a #1 from the same league.  The same will hold true for the #3’s and #4’s.

 

Step 4 – Repeat step 2 for any #3 ranked league player.

Step 5 – Repeat step 2 for any #4 ranked league player

Step 6 – Players on the tournament ladder will be placed on the lines of the draw sheet according to the attached diagram.

Step 7 – The remaining players will be put on the unoccupied lines in the order in which they are drawn starting at the top.

Step 8 – Team members shall not play against each other in the first round.  To prevent this from happening they will be placed on the next comparable line on the opposite end of the draw.

 

                                    CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

 

1.      All PIAA rules governing athletic events are in affect U.S.T.A. rules apply. Reading the rules will be the only warning. First offense – one point;  second offense – one game; third double tournament.  Conduct on the court shall display good sportsmanship.

2.      Scoring will be:

A.     The “NO-AD” scoring system will be used for the first 2 rounds.

B.     The twelve point tie-breaker will apply if the score should reach six-all in all rounds.

3.      The players will call their own lines.  If there should be any questions, players may call time out and ask for a decision or assistance from the tournament committee members. Only Committee members not involved with coaching the match in question may make decisions about the match. No one may leave the courts during this time.

4.      Warm-up time is not to exceed 15 minutes including serves. Play is to be continuous.

5.      A one minute brake on the court, for coaching, may be taken between first and second set.  Only the coaches, designated by the schools of athletes participating, may be on the courts for coaching. A five minute break, off the courts may be taken if the players split sets.

6.      Break between matches – twenty minutes upon conclusion of match of both players.

7.      At the conclusion of the match, both players report the score immediately to the tournament directors.

8.      Each player is to bring a new can of optic yellow championship balls. The winner will take the new can for the next round.

9.      No spectators will be permitted on the courts.

 

OFFICIAL’S ASSIGNMENT

The officials are members of the Committee when they do not have a player in the tournament.

 

                                                CONTESTANTS ATTIRE

All tennis contestants are required to wear appropriate tennis attire (i.e. school issued tennis shirt and tennis shorts or tennis skirt).  No exceptions are permitted. T-shirts, without school name/nickname, altered apparel, jeans, JEWELRY, and advertisements (other than one visible logo/trademark not exceeding 2 ¼ square inches and 2 ¼ inches in a dimension on cap, headband, visor school issued tennis shirt, and shorts or skirt; and/or a school’s name/nickname will be permitted. The use of tape for the purpose of covering a logo that does not meet the aforementioned specifications WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. The school’s name/nickname and/or school’s logo is permitted on the front and/or back of the school issued tennis shirt. Shoes with soles that will leave discolored marking on competition surfaces are not permitted.

                        PLAYOFF INSTRUCTIONS

 

Coaches:  In order to be eligible for District I competition, girls’ must be accompanied by either a coach or an adult with written authorization from their school for the duration of the competition. Such written authorization must be presented to the tournament chairperson prior to the start of the event.

 

DISTRICT TEAM TOURNAMENT

 

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

 

The Steering Committee will seed up to 16 teams for AA and AAA tournaments.  The League champions will automatically be entered into the tournament according to their classification. The selection for the additional positions (wild cards) in the tournament will be based on League record and the team’s record against common opponent  teams in District I.  In the event a League champion chooses not to participate, this position will become an additional wild card selection and open to any at-large nomination from any League. Steering Committee members must check with their League members as to interest in participating in the tournament.

 

TEAM TOURNAMENT FORMAT

 

  1. Three singles and two doubles
  2. Players may not play singles and doubles on the same day.
  3. Coaches must play their best player of the three singles players designated for each match at the number one singles position, second best at number two, third best at number three.  Any player on the team ladder below the absent player may be substituted in singles and must play at the third singles position.  The same philosophy must also be used in placing the doubles teams in the lineup. The coach has the option of keeping doubles teams intact.
  4. Upon returning to the team from extended absence due to injury, illness, ineligibility, or other documented absence, the player shall return to the same position previously played.
  5. Coaches are encouraged to have exhibition matches if courts are available.
  6. The District team line up shall stand through the entire district tournament and state tournament, with the exception of allowing substitutions for injury or illness.

 

RULES OF PLAY

 

  1. USTA rules will be followed and all rules pertaining to eligibility according to the PIAA by-laws will prevail.
  2. Scoring will be traditional – best of three sets. If the score reaches “six-all” in any set, a 12 point tie-breaker shall be used to determine the winner of the set.

 

  1. The only coaching will be during a one minute break, on the court, between first and second sets and between second and third sets if the players should split sets. They may take a five minute break and come off the courts at this time.
  2. A written line-up must be presented simultaneously by both coaches prior to the start of the match.
  3. Introductions are to take place at 2:15 p.m.  Warm up with the opponent is to take place at 2:30 p.m. and play begun by 2:45 p.m. 
  4. The modified penalty point system of USTA shall apply with the reading of the rules as the first warning. Second warning, one point. Third warning, one game.  Fourth warning the match is defaulted.
  5. If a match is postponed due to weather it will be played on the rain date. If the match is aborted due to inclement weather, it must commence at the point of interruption.
  6. The players will call their own score.
  7. Grievances will be handled by members of the Committee that are not coaching teams involved in the grievance.

The higher seeds will host all matches. In the event the host team does not have five contiguous courts they may designate a home site or play at the opponents’ courts. The final match will be played at a neutral site that has fie contiguous courts.

OFFICIAL’S ASSIGNMENT

The coaches of the playing teams will oversee the preliminary rounds of the tournament. Both coaches are responsible for water, and first aid.  Scorekeepers are to be used if either team has them. The District Committee will oversee the entire tournament. A tournament official, appointed by the Chairperson, will oversee the finals.

First and second place individuals on the team will receive medals.
